How Does A Sobriety Toolkit Help With Addiction? Part 2

So as we noted in Part 1, coping mechanisms can be either positive or negative. Drug and alcohol abuse can be a way to numb out the pain that comes with life’s hard knocks. But when you start to use drugs or alcohol on a regular basis to deal with the negative aspects of life, this can develop into dependence, and from there, become addiction.

While some cope in a positive way, learning to deal with both the good and the bad with productive, effective coping mechanisms, is a way to ensure long-lasting recovery. That’s why the best recovery programs will teach you how to deal with your problems positively.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can cope with recovery in a positive way.

Exercise.
Exercise is great for every aspect of mental health. The release of endorphins, combined with the stress and tension relief that exercises provides, can improve energy levels, sleep patterns, memory, and increase your resilience for handling triggers in the future. Once you get hooked on exercise, it can be a tool to be used your entire life, in order to cope positively, rather than turn to drugs and alcohol.

Meditation.
Meditation involves the process of focusing on the present moment, and relieving yourself of negative thoughts. It can decrease depression and anxiety, and can be used at any moment in the day, anywhere, at any time. For more about meditation, check this out.

Deep Breathing.
For those that struggle with anxiety, learning how to manage breathing patterns is a great way to relax naturally. Deep breaths increase the amount of oxygen to the brain, a natural form of relaxation.

Positive affirmations.
What’s a positive affirmation? Perhaps you’ve been in a stressful situation and without thinking, said to yourself, “it’s going to be okay.” Repeating positive messages to yourself can help to decrease depression and anxiety, as well as set up your subconscious for the future, when you’ll automatically start thinking more positive thoughts.

Aromatherapy.
Did you know that good smells are good for you? It’s true. Like almost everything else on this list, aromatherapy is a tool that can be used anywhere, at any time. Rub a few drops of lavender oil in your hands, smell them, and feel instantly relaxed.

Hot beverages, yoga, art therapy (think coloring books) and other pleasant, relaxing activities can be added to your toolkit as well. It’s a great idea to make a list of these activities, and turn to them when you feel depressed, anxious, or have the urge to use drugs or alcohol.
