The Internet can be a wonderful source of information, a great tool for allowing people to keep in contact with each other, and even a way for people to meet new people.
Of course, we all know that the Internet has its downsides. It can be a source for misinformation. People can also use it to bully others, not befriend them. The Internet can also be a source for something else: drugs.
It seems like dealers are peddling some drugs on virtual street corners. If you type in the names of some drugs into your basic computer search engine, you’ll find numerous places to buy these substances. Just as dangerous are some “cures” for drugs.
If you go online, you’ll also find numerous products that claim to help you detox from the effects of drugs and alcohol, products that claim to be cheaper than going to rehab. But be wary of such products.
Many manufacturers for these detoxes claim that their products feature natural ingredients and offer a safer way to end addictions. But effective detox doesn’t come in a box or a bottle. It’s a complex medical procedure that requires trained medical professionals. Otherwise, the detox might not be comfortable or safe. It might even be deadly.
Why? Drugs and alcohol make complex changes to people’s bodies and brains. Addicts’ bodies and brains might become accustomed to these changes and might react violently if someone removes these substances abruptly.
That’s why real detox, medically supervised detox, is often a gradual process. Sometimes, medical professionals prescribe medications that have similar effects to abused substances. These medications prevent the abrupt shock of removing everything, a process sometimes known as cold turkey. The medications also make life more comfortable, since withdrawing without medical help can create nausea, insomnia, and other side effects.
Other side effects of withdrawal are much more dangerous. They involve seizures, comas, and even death. Buying a detox online might save a little money, but this penny-pinching can be much more expensive—it can cost you your life.
